Mai i te kei o ngā waka ki te ihu o ngā waka: Jeremy Leatinu’u

Jeremey Leatinuu Haerenga Hamoa still 2018 WEB copy

Still from Haerenga Pākehā by Jeremy Leatinuʻu

Available until 24 November

Jeremy Leatinu’u’s work is presented in a three-channel video format with audio which weaves a narrative around journeys and cultures through personal identity and history. This exhibition is particularly valuable for senior ākonga studying moving image and documentary photography, as it is a fine example of how to weave personal stories and narratives into a visual media format in a way that also relates to wider audiences. Younger tamariki will also enjoy this exhibition.

A workshop about journeys from home to school will be the focus of our programme. Tamariki will illustrate and document their journey to and from school by drawing and painting directly onto printouts of local street maps. These will act as personal narratives regarding their daily journeys, which allows them to explore their environments and the events which occur within them. Students will be encouraged to use both written and visual language as a means to illustrate these works.

Key themes: Creativity, pūrākau, environment, visual literacy, lived experience, culture

Subject areas: Visual Arts, Social Sciences, Technology, Media studies
