Gerda Leenards: Following the Blue Ribbon - Journeys on the River Li | Main Gallery
1 February 2014 - 4 May 2014
This collection of painted screens, panels and drawings inspired by Gerda Leenards 2007 and 2008 trips down China’s River Li began in Guilin, sister city of Hastings.
The Wellington-based Dutch-born artist offers the viewer a deeply contemplative experience. Known for her atmospheric paintings, in particular of Fiordland, Leenards has long been influenced by both the drama of this country’s natural environment and the tradition of Dutch landscape painting.
In these works, Leenards continues her exploration of light and atmosphere. The paintings evoke a sense of gliding along this ancient river, which is often referred to in Chinese poetry as ‘the blue ribbon’.
