te MOKO
on our face / in your face | Main Gallery
12 June - 15 August 2021
The te MOKO exhibition showcases “the face of Māori Art today”.
A specifically designed installation of contemporary artwork by artists of Heretaunga engaging in reprising cultural values beyond the Marae.
Of treasuring the images that identify us;
Of claiming a space to stand as ourselves;
Of being Māori-centric in identifying what makes for creative artistic excellence.
Curated by Sandy Adsett
te MOKO on our face / in your face showcases the dynamic, ever-changing expression of contemporary Māori art by Iwi Toi Kahungunu – Māori Artists. Distinct from other contemporary Māori art movements, this group of artists explores and engages with the unique cultural histories and the role of Māori knowledge in the Kahungunu area, and continues to invigorate discussions about identity and place.
