Local Lockdown | Alchove Gallery

13 June – 19 July 2020

In March 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, Aotearoa New Zealand was asked to stay at home and restrict all unnecessary contact with other people to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This state of precaution was officially referred to as ‘lockdown’.

Never before had New Zealanders been asked to restrict their movements in such a way. The effects of the lockdown were wide-ranging - affecting every whānau and individual differently.

Hastings City Art Gallery Te Whare toi o Heretaunga was also forced to adapt to the unfolding pandemic, with scheduled exhibitions postponed or cancelled.

Stepping into this void, 16 Hawke’s Bay artists have come together to create Local Lockdown. Using their practice as a means of exploring and making sense of their lockdown experience, and its effects on our society as a whole, this exhibition brings together a wide range of work produced during lockdown.

With arts supplies stockists closed throughout the four-week lockdown period, the artists involved worked with either stockpiled supplies or adapted their practice to make the most of the materials they had at hand.
