Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga - Hastings Art Gallery is a free, inclusive, public gallery, for everyone to enjoy leading contemporary art experiences.
Located in the heart of Civic Square, the gallery has one street entrance, at 201 Eastbourne Street East, Hastings.
On-street parking in Hastings CBD is pay and display during business hours and on Saturdays.
There are two accessible car parks located on Lyndon Road East (one directly outside the Hastings District Council building and one across the road from it). There is also one accessible carpark on Russell Street South.
If you need to park closer to the gallery, please call ahead and advise our visitor hosts that you require parking in the Civic Square area.
All our gallery spaces are wheelchair accessible. We have one wheelchair for free public use. Please let our visitor hosts know if you would like it.
Civic Square has large, painted concrete painted pavers. Please take extra care on these, as there are some uneven surfaces and they can be slippery when wet.
There is a large, covered porch area in front of the gallery's entrance. You can enter the gallery via paved steps or a paved ramp. There is a handrail for both. The ramp is on the right side of the entrance.
Once inside the gallery, the gallery's floors are either ceramic tiles or timber. Both surfaces are smooth and non-slip.
The gallery has two accessible bathrooms, one in each of the male and female toilets. The bathroom flooring is linoleum. Please ask our visitor hosts for directions or support if you need it. We are working towards upgrading our facilities to accessible, gender-neutral bathrooms.
Service animals are welcome in the Gallery. Water is available on request.
We sometimes offer free, guided tours which focus on touch and sound, for blind and low-vision visitors. Please phone or email us if you're interested in these.
The gallery can sometimes be a loud space, with lots of echo. To make your visit quieter, we have earmuffs in adult and child sizes you can borrow while here. Please ask a visitor host for these.
We aim to have audio guides available for each exhibition. If there is a specific exhibition you would like an audio guide for, please let us know before you arrive.
We offer quiet times during our school holiday tamariki art programmes. For more information or to let us know how we can best meet your needs for these sessions, please phone 06 871 5095.
If you need to bring your assistive devices and medical supplies to fully enjoy the gallery, contact us and we'll do what we can to help.
If you have any other accessibility needs you would like to discuss before you visit, please call our friendly visitor hosts on (06) 871 5095 or email us.
There is a fire alarm in the gallery. If it sounds, a visitor host will guide you outside, via the main doors, into the emergency evacuation area in Civic Square.
We want everyone to have a great time when they're here, so we really appreciate you leaving your marker pens, putty or play dough, food, drinks, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vaping devices at home and not using them inside the gallery.
You can take photos during your visit, but not of exhibits with a 'No photography' sign. Please don't use a flash as it can damage the artworks.
