Prospects Fearful: Caroline McQuarrie & Shaun Matthews

Propects Fearful WEB ONLY

Prospects Fearful, Hastings City Art Gallery, 2021

Caroline McQuarrie and Shaun Matthews, Prospects Fearful
Available until Friday 25 March

Prospects Fearful tells a historical story of surveyor Thomas Brunner’s 1846 journey from Nelson to Te Tai Poutini (the West Coast) and back again via the mediums of embroidery, photography and weaving. Through meticulous research into Brunner’s diaries, his Māori guides, and the environments he experienced during this arduous journey, McQuarrie and Matthews look at the ways in which these stories are told through a bicultural lens.

We will use this exhibition as a pathway to understanding how can we can show a journey, or tell a story, through art. In this programme, students will work together to figure out who and what the story is about, where is the story based and what things they use to tell the story. Students will also have the opportunity to have a handling experience with pāraerae (sandals) which the artists have made especially for this programme.

After our discussion, students will work in groups and think about their own important journeys and draw them on paper. They will them devise ways to represent these stories abstractly, and collate these to create a collaborative piece.
