The Crescent Moon: the Asian Face of Islam in New Zealand gives a face and a voice to New Zealand’s Muslims of Asian descent, who form the majority of Muslims both in this country and in the world as a whole.

In the making of this exhibition, renowned photographer Ans Westra and writer Adrienne Jansen travelled through the country, catching up with people in their everyday lives. They met a very diverse group, ethnically, culturally, and theologically. These individuals spoke with disarming honesty about the media, 9/11, identity, and their faith – but mostly their lives and experiences in Aotearoa.

In this programme, students will explore these images in detail, and learn about the ways in which everyday photography provides an opportunity for the viewer to relate and empathise with those in the photographs.

In the art-making session, students will learn about the abstract geometrical forms and patterns that are unique to Islamic art. With a focus on pattern and repetition, we will use carved erasers and watercolour pens to create relief prints, resulting in striking and unique patterns.
