Terminus: Jess Johnson & Simon Ward

Jess Johnson and Simon Ward Terminus VR Still 2018

Jess Johnson and Simon Ward, Terminus (VR still), 2018.

Available Monday May 2 - Friday October 21

Be prepared to have your mind blown with our next interactive exhibition, TerminusTerminus is a fully immersive virtual reality exhibition by artists Jess Johnson and Simon Ward. With their pioneering use of virtual reality, Johnson’s psychedelic drawings and designs are brought to life through animation by Ward. This exhibition transports viewers to an immersive digital realm, where they will explore surreal landscapes, forms, figures, shapes and buildings. The virtual reality is also complemented by quilts created by Johnson and her mother Cynthia Johnson, which have not been shown in Aotearoa before. This interactive exhibition is one not to be missed!

Prepare yourself for a slippage of time and space as your journey propels you across five distinct realms: you will pass through Fleshhold Crossing; take respite in Known Unknown; lose yourself within Scumm Engine; bravely face impending danger in the tower of Gog & Magog; and experience the brink of sensory overload in the psychedelic Tumblewych.

In this programme, the students will participate in the VR experience. Older students will create an artwork based on Johnson’s creative font and younger students will make tessellating tiles that can be displayed as 3D artworks back at school.
