CONTEMPORARY MĀORI ART: TIKA TONU

Darryl Thomson Tiki 1 2020

Darryl Thomson, D-CONSTRUCTED Tiki 1, 2019

CONTEMPORARY MĀORI ART - TIKA TONU: 30 KAHUNGUNU ARTISTS
Available until Sunday 1 November

Explore the world of contemporary Māori art in TIKA TONU – 30 Kahungunu Artists. Curated by Sandy Adsett (Ngāti Kahungunu), TIKA TONU showcases artwork from iwi of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa, ki Heretaunga, and ki Wairarapa. Inspired by traditional marae arts, we will look at pieces that include raranga (weaving), whakairo (carving), kōwhaiwhai patterns, and more.
Examining how modern-day artists take inspiration from traditional marae arts and adapt them in a contemporary setting, students will explore these pieces in depth, and create their very artwork inspired by the exhibition.
