Jan Nigro: Out of the Bedroom into the Lounge

Artwork: Jan Nigro, Young Girl in Stripped Towel, 1992

An important NZ artist, Nigro is best known for her colourful celebration of the nude human figure, through which, perhaps unwittingly, she became a commentator throughout a period of immense social change in New Zealand.

Students will explore the context of Nigro’s work and her response to events around her, study her use of motifs, media, and methods, and analyse her communication styles: cubism, figuration, abstraction, symbolism, etc.

Hands-on workshop

Students draw on Nigro’s techniques to create their own artwork while responding to events in a contemporary setting.
