This exhibition launches a new biennial programme of contemporary art commissions, supported by a partnership between Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga Hastings Art Gallery and the Gwen Malden Charitable Trust.
Four Hawke’s Bay artists, Leslie Falls, Nephi Tupaea (Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Tiipa, Ngāti Koroki Kahukura, Ngāti Kahungunu), Te Kīra Whakamoe (Tūhoe, Ngāti Ruapani) and Bernie Winkels have received support to develop and exhibit a new body of work.
Bringing together distinct perspectives, this group of artists shed light on the times we are living in and imagine how things could be otherwise. They explore relationships to the natural world, to history, memory, and self-determination, to the forms of labour and infrastructure which shape our daily lives. Their works speak to and acknowledge being in relation to others – collaborators, communities, tīpuna, and each other.
