Margriet Windhausen is an established artist with artworks in Auckland Art Gallery collection and public sculptures in many of New Zealand’s cities. Margriet taught Sir Andrew’s great granddaughter Art and made a connection to the Russell family through her.
The statue was made by a process called bronze casting, where Windhausen begins by researching from photographs and writing about Sir Andrew. She also met the Russell family to learn more of the essence of the man. Completing an initial small scale sketch in wax, Windhausen then worked the figure in clay at actual size over a period of about 4 months. Once she was satisfied that she had captured the character of Sir Andrew, the clay sculpture was taken through a number of casting processes, before the figure is cast in bronze.
