Artists Floor Talk: Ashton Lexie Jamieson and Sharleen Gamble

Young Art FloorTalk

Saturday 2 October, 11am | | Hear Ashton Lexie Jamieson and Sharleen Gamble talk about their exhibition Young Art.

Both recent graduates from EIT, Ashton Jamieson and Sharleen Gamble strive in their work to create an awareness of the quality and diversity of contemporary female artists at work in the Hawke’s Bay.

Ashton’s practice has always projected a cheeky and contemporary girl-power aesthetic, whilst discussing a past and present feminine fight. Whilst completing her Masters of Creative Practice through IDEAschool at EIT (2020) she adopted the term ‘Femmage ’ to describe her feminine realm. A praxis that aligns with the artist’s urge to collect, assemble and construct mixed-media worlds-within-worlds.

Sharleen is a sculptor who celebrates materials in themselves, including their embodied histories, and works to enable their narrative possibilities, and material voices, to emerge.

She assembles wood, steel, used materials, and found objects, fabricating abstract forms through explorative, haptic and chance processes to generate material conversations. Sharleen’s practice is also directed and disciplined by her mindfulness of sustainability. She works to reinforce the importance of repurposing and recycling, careful to re-utilise resources at hand, in her attention to establishing a relationship between her art and a sustainable future.
