The team at Hastings City Art Gallery are excited to present a solo exhibition of work by Israel Tangaroa Birch - one of the country's leading contemporary Maori artists. For Hastings-born Israel Tangaroa Birch (Ngāpuhi, Ngai Tawake, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Rakaipaaka), this new exhibition is a homecoming. Birch was a Norsewear Art Award finalist in 2004 and 2005 and the winner in 2006. Success in the Hastings-based national art award was a turning point in Birch’s career and this exhibition scales the decade since.
“This is a reflection back to that important time,” he comments. “It was when I broke fee into a new space for my work.”
Painting with Light promises to delight Birch’s many avid followers while attracting new viewers in Hawke’s Bay who will find unique pleasure in the richly lacquered, vibrantly coloured stainless steel works he has become renowned for.
