Wellesley Binding, David Guerin, Bridget Sutherland: Work and Deed: Art, Memory and the First World War | Holt Gallery

November 11 2015 – January 31, 2016

Leaving war platitudes behind, a sculptor, painter, and filmmaker strike out separately into fields where images and words may realign themselves in the imagination, with the deed of history known as the Great War.

Wellesley Binding’s large paintings address the seeming futility, and necessity, of words themselves responding to the poetry and letters of the English war poet Wilfred Owen. David Guerin’s sculpture is fuelled by the letters sent home to Dunedin by First World War New Zealand artilleryman Alfred Owen Wilkinson. Bridget Sutherland utilises poetry, archival and hand painted film to critically reflect on the treatment of animals and nature in World War I.
