EAST 2020: CALLING FOR SUBMISSIONS

EAST2020 filler

Entries are now open for EAST 2020 a biennial exhibition presented by Te Whare toi o Heretaunga Hastings City Art Gallery celebrating Ngā ringatoi o Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay arts sector. For EAST 2020 we invite submissions, across all art practices, from New Zealand contemporary ringatoi artists and designers who hold a connection to Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay. Applicants are asked to submit existing works available for consideration, and also have the option to propose a new work. Emerging and established artists and designers are encouraged to apply.

The EAST 2020 curator will be Clayton Gibson, the newly appointed Curator at the Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga Hastings City Art Gallery. Gibson is excited and feels privileged to be taking on the challenge of curating EAST 2020. Prior to taking up this position, he worked as the curator at the Tairawhiti Museum and Arts Centre and Education Officer at the Manawatu Art Gallery. More recently working as HOD of Art at Campion College in Gisborne and teaching at Taikura Rudolf Steiner School in Hastings. Being a practicing visual artist himself, he has exhibited in a number of local exhibitions and galleries.

Gibson has a commitment and belief in art as a powerful social tool and a deep respect for the quality of art being created in Heretaunga. He looks forward to working with artists to bring their work into the exhibition in a way that it is accessible to the local community, and promotes the exhibition as a must see event on the national arts calendar.

To apply please supply the following:

  • Artist biography (50 words)
  • Statement about your practice (100 words)
  • Statement about your connection to the Hawke’s Bay (50-100 words)
  • CV including selected exhibition history (2 x A4 pages maximum)

(A) Existing Works:

  • Documentation and written descriptions of existing works available for exhibition (please indicate any technical requirements, dimensions, specific installation requirements).

(B) New Works:

  • Please supply 100-200 words describing the proposed works and concept with support material (images or AV files) and a draft budget outlining material costs. Please note: To submit a proposal for new works you must also submit under section (A) Existing Works
