The Hastings City Art Gallery presents “Game On”, a national art exhibition to run in conjunction with Hawke’s Bay ‘Having a Ball Festival’ and the wider national Festival 2011 later this year.
“Game on” is being staged within the spectacle of a major international sporting event and we aim to present a selection of New Zealand’s finest contemporary art to both visitors and local New Zealanders.
Guest curator Jacob Scott is an artist, designer and educator with Ngati Kahungunu, Ati Awa, Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Raukawa tribal affiliation.
Curator John Walsh is an acclaimed artist with nine years curatorial experience at Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand. He has Ngati Porou tribal affiliation.
Their vision for the exhibition ‘Game On’ presents a contemporary expanded view of ‘Culture’. Rugby is THE gameof 2011.
There are so many aspects of the game that underpin our national character, culture and practice that are useful tools in the plays of the world. Whether we are fans or foe, it pervades our being and our place, and it provides a fundamental image of New Zealand to the rest of the world.
This year 17 nations will gather here to pitch for the prestigious title of world bestc ulminating on the rugby field.
“GAME ON” will help to present something of the broader underlying cultural plays and games we currently engage in. As always, art reflects life and the selectors Scott and Walsh have surveyed the latest New Zealand players to present a winning team that collectively visually articulates our nation.
With over seventy artists from every discipline, this exciting exhibition showcases some great New Zealand art leaders or coaches to emerging run away stars, offering a long look at our New Zealand identity while presenting future possibilities for national and international exchange.
