Still Life with Moving Parts | Foyer and Alcove Galleries
Curated by Anna Crichton

27 February - 9 May 2021

Still Life with Moving Parts is an exhibition created by outsider artists from A Supported Life. A Supported Life works with the Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Health to empower people with intellectual disabilities through supported accommodation, lifestyle planning and development. Their creative space - Two4nine is motivated by a belief in the authentic creativity in the works of their artists. We believe art is about revealing ourselves and creating meaningful connections – between artists, tutors and art lovers.

Anna Crichton set up a studio container on the Auckland waterfront in 2018 and worked with artists from A Supported Life. They explored the downtown city waterfront and with their clipboards, paper and pencil in hand drew what inspired them and used these drawings as inspiration to develop their art further. Then each week in 2020 the artists worked with facilitator Anna Crichton and sculptor Rebecca Rose at the Henderson Menzshed in West Auckland where they would don their aprons and goggles and carve, drill, saw, burn, glue and paint to create their work.

The work in this exhibition illustrates different visual constructions, a different way of seeing, unconventional ideas - and hopefully for the viewer a new and enlightening experience.

Enjoy these moving works not for what they are ‘worth’ but for the artists’ pure joy of expressing their ideas and passions.
